The Joy of Fascination

It is amazing when a child becomes fascinated with a particular topic. We recently had a little boy (2) who became fascinated with the nursery rhyme '5 cheeky monkeys jumping on the bed' this led to so many activities for us all. The book area became the monkeys bedroom, the teddies became the monkeys and then various toys from around the nursery. What was more amazing was the learning that took place. The little boy engaged in early maths by arranging the 'monkeys' checking he had 5, then taking one away each time. Then the language he developed in engaging others in his play, telling them it was their turn and setting rules of who was to go next. What seems like a simple fascination can be so rewarding for everyone.
